Premier League History

The Premier League was proposed by the English clubs to make the financial situation better. In the late 1980s, English football hit its low. English clubs were banned from participating in European competitions. They were struggling to manage stadiums and basic facilities. To overcome such issues, influential and big clubs in England; Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, and Arsenal agreed on the suggestion to be a part of a league on national television to get lucrative benefits. To add credibility a proposal was sent to the Football Association. In June 1991, the FA announced to support for the plan of the Premier League; hence, the FA Premier League was founded on 20 Feb 1992.

Premier League Format

20 clubs play Premier League against each other to earn points. Each team plays two matches against the other team, one at home stadium and one away (opponent’s home stadium) which makes a total of 38 matches for each team.

Premier League Points Table

Teams in the Premier League are ranked on the points table that decides the league champion, promotion or relegation of the team. A winning team receives three points. One point is awarded to each team for a draw. The losing team does not get any points. Goal difference and goal score help to determine the Premier League standings of the club if points are equal. If two clubs tie for the championship, relegation or qualification with equal points, goal difference, and goals scored then a head-to-head record is considered; if still teams tie, a match at a neutral ground decides the rank.

The top four clubs on the Premier League points table qualify for the next season of UEFA Champions League tournament.

A Premier League season starts in August and ends in May. Most games are scheduled on weekends while others are on weekdays as other competitions like the Championship, FA Cup etc. take place simultaneously.
