Football Club de Nantes which is known as FC Nantes or Nantes in short (IPA: [nɑ̃t]), is a football club in Nantes, Pays de la Loire. The club was formed on the 21st of April in the year 1943 during World War II, due to mergers of local clubs in the city to form a big club. Between 1992 and 2007 the club was known as FC Nantes Atlantique and changed its name to the current one at the beginning of the 2007–08 season. Nantes is a football club that competes in Ligue 1 which is the highest level of football in France. To be precise, the formation of the club goes back to the year 1943. The first professional match of Nantes was against CA Paris at Stade Olympique de Colombes, in which Nantes won the match 2–0. The first home match was a loss with the same score to Troyes. This first season the club ended at the fifth place, after which the club manager Aimé Nuic was released from the club due to disagreement and was replaced by Antoine Raab who joined the team as a player-coach. Nantes had gone 16 matches unbeaten but then fell to a 9–0 defeat to Sochaux.
It began as a football club in 1937 and became a professional football club in 1945 when it emerged the champions of the Western Region championship, and began the 1945 season in the second division. During the period of historic president Marcel Saupin, it hovered in mid-table in that division, with a relegation scare in 1950, which was averted in the last match of the season.
From 1951, the results became better; the club was in 4th place in 1952 and narrowly missed the promotion under the experienced coach, Emile Veinante. Antoine Raab succeeded him and brought in better players such as Gerrit Vreken and Jan van Geen from the Netherlands; however, the club remained stagnant again. Several coaches were appointed, but the club did not move forward, while good starts were made in campaigns, they faded by the end of the same.
Marcel Saupin chose the new promising amateur coach José Arribas in 1960. He changed the team’s play, the play that was more of the individualistic, less teamwork and attack oriented play. His system showed promise but results were not immediate: the club was in the 11th and 6th place in his first two seasons and 2nd in 1962, where the club led the second division of the first half of the season. At that time, the club competed in the Anglo-French-Scottish cup which only lasted for a short time and lost to Liverpool FC by 7-1.
Nantes and José Arribas immediately got to the top division and in the first year ended in eighth place. The following season was even better: the club was French champion, its striker Jacky Simon was the league’s leading scorer and the first Nantais to be capped. The following year, the club was confirmed at the top and it won the league again with the best defense of the season having let in 36 goals and the best attack with 84 goals to their name. New and young talents like Patrice Rio were brought in and combined with the experienced Argentinians Ángel Marcos and Hugo Bargas with the professional Bayern Munich player Erich Maas, the club was able to change its fate and clinch the league title in 1973. They also made it to the final of the French Cup but lost to Lyon.
However, year after year, the French league was conquered, but European performances remained poor. It is worth mentioning that in 1976 the club and José Arribas agreed to end their cooperation that was lasting 13 years.
With a new coach Jean Vincent appointed on the team’s bench, the club expected more successes both in domestic cups and in European cups. He decided to renew the team by adding young academy players including Loic Amisse, Eric Pécout, and Bruno Baronchelli. The team retained its stylish performance and clinched the league in the following year 1977 for the fourth time. In 1978, the team came second to Monaco, but this was followed by more European disappointments. In that year the club installed its advanced training grounds La Jonelière now known as José Arribas Sporting Centre which was the most developed one in France at that time.
In the year 1979 Jean-Claude Suaudeau was made the assistant manager and this combination paved way for success in the club. They claimed their first French Cup in 1979 and got to the semi-finals of the Cup Winners Cup competition where they were defeated by Valencia of Spain. With the Argentinian star player Enzo Trossero and the young academy players José Touré and William Ayache the club could not be beaten in their home stadium for 92 games.
Jean Vincent left the club in 1981 because he could not find a way of accommodating new signing Vahid Halilhodzic in the team. Then Suaudeau became the head of the team as a head coach. He was favored by a solid defense consisting of French international Jean-Paul Bertrand-Demanes in goals, and Patrice Rio, Maxime Bossis in the center back positions, with Michel Bibard, Thierry Tusseau and William Ayache, in the fullback positions. Bruno Baronchelli remained a force in the midfield while academy product Seth Adonkor was also a great help. Winger Loic Amisse had a great season while strikers José Touré and Vahid Halilhodzic were great partners. In their new La Beaujoire stadium constructed to host the 1984 Euro competition, Nantes clinched the title in 1983 they however failed to clinch the double after they were defeated in the French Cup final by Paris Saint Germain.
Several other French clubs then raised their spending limits further and Nantes could not follow. Some important players of the club like Thierry Tusseau, William Ayache, and Maxime Bossis left the club and joined other clubs. Although continuing to be one of the top teams in France, with players like Jorge Burruchaga who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986, Nantes had a rather modest 1984 season, finishing only in sixth place, while in 1985 and 1986 the team was second. However, other expensive recruits like Maurice Johnston and Eddie Vercauteren did not deliver and results started fading gradually. The fact that academy players continued to flow into the club, including Didier Deschamps and Marcel Desailly, was not enough to cover the losses and progression of other clubs. The club recorded the following performance; in 1987, the club was ranked 12th, while in 1988 the club managed to get to the 10th position.
Nantes was in financial trouble and nearly relegated in the season 1991/1992. The club was forced to bring in its young academy players to play for the first team in the top division and thus, became a feeder club by selling its best young talents to other bigger clubs.
