The stadium has also hosted numerous international games. Now the esteemed football stadium is hosting the last of a few matches and events in 2025. All these events are significant as the venue will be gone forever. The roars of the crowd will not echo again here after the Premier League season 2024-25 ends. History Of Goodison Park: All You Need To Know About Design And Structure

Goodison Park was known as “Mere Green Field” when Everton rented the site in 1892. The stadium was named Goodison Park because it was built against Goodison Road, named after a civil engineer. AJ Prescott was appointed as the advisor and surveyor of the site. Two uncovered stands that can accommodate 4,000 spectators each and a covered stand with a capacity of 3,000 spectators were built in 1892. The first football match was played between Everton FC and Bolton Wanderers. The first league game was played between Everton FC and Nottingham Forest on 3 September 1892. Everton bought Goodison Park in 1895.

Goodison Park went through several redevelopments and renovations. In 1895, Bullens Road Stand was built and a roof was placed on the original Goodison Road Stand. In 1906, the double-decker Goodison Avenue Stand was built. Archibald Leitch, known for designing stadiums in England designed Goodison Road Stand in 1909. He has designed Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium, Arsenal Stadium, Fulham’s Craven Cottage, Manchester United’s Old Trafford, and many more across the UK and Ireland. In 1926, Bullens Road Stand was completed with a two-tier steel frame and wooden floor. The upper tier was seated with a terrace below. It is called the Paddock. Until 1963 a few changes were made. It is one of the trusses created by Archibald Leitch. Goodison Park is the only football stadium that retained the two complete trusses designed by the renowned architect. In 1931 Everton constructed the first ever dugouts in Goodison Park, inspired by Pittodrie Stadium. Now is the last chance to visit the stadium and see the historic venue. To visit the stadium, you can book stadium tours but the true essence can be felt only on Everton FC matchdays; therefore, buy Everton FC tickets for the upcoming Premier League games and get a chance to admire the beauty of an iconic football stadium.

In 1938, another two-tiered stand was added designed by Archibald Leitch called Gwladys Street Stand. Sadly, in 1940, during the war, a bomb damaged the stand which is still noticeable after the repair.

In 1957, Everton hosted its rival and neighbour Liverpool FC, it was the first match at Goodison Park after the installation of floodlights. More than 58,700 spectators attended the match. It was the tallest pylon at that time in the country. It was the first football stadium in England to install a scoreboard. Also, Everton was the first to introduce goal nets.

Between 1960 and 1973, chairman Sir John Moores provided huge finances for large-scale redevelopments. Due to these huge investments, the Toffees acquired the nickname “The Mersey Millionaires”. Goodison Park was also featured in a film that featured Everton matches against Manchester City and Sheffield United.

In 1990, all top-flight football stadiums were asked to become all-seated. Hence, seats were installed in the Paddock and Gwladys Street Stand was rebuilt. The Park End Stand was completely demolished in 1994 to be replaced by a single-tier cantilever stand.

In 1992, Everton FC celebrated the 100th anniversary of the stadium by playing a game against Borussia Monchengladbach – a German football club.

Goodison Park has gone through several changes; many significant events took place over the years at the venue, a few of which are mentioned above. Both the club and stadium have a rich history. Everton is one of the founding clubs of the Football League and Premier League in 1888 and 1992 respectively. The club has won twenty-four major trophies including FA Cup, league titles, and Community Sheilds. It is one of the most successful clubs that has the longest continuous presence in English top-flight football. If you are not planning to watch the last few Premier League matches of Everton FC at Goodison Park, you are missing a lot. If you are planning a Goodison Park visit, secure tickets before it's too late as Everton match tickets are in high demand.

The Top Balcony is the highest part of the stadium with a stunning view of all the action on the pitch and across Stanley Park to Anfield. The stand has a capacity of 12,664 spectators. The stand also has the Family Enclosure, conference rooms and other hospitality facilities. If you want to enjoy the stunning views and also don’t want to miss the game, a spot at the Top Balcony will be the best. Gwladys Street Stand

This stand is located at the north end of the football stadium. Gwladys Street Stand is divided into two sections; Upper Gwladys and Lower Gwladys. It is known as the “popular end” that holds the most passionate fans of the Toffees. The stand has a capacity of 10,611 spectators. In July 2016, it was renamed Howard Kendall Gwladys Street End after the most successful manager of Everton FC. If you want to enjoy the true essence of Everton matches or the vibe and atmosphere of Goodison Park, a seat at Gwladys Street Stand will be ideal. Goodison Park also has a church on its premises, named St Luke’s church. The church can be seen from the stands and is used as a backdrop during live TV broadcasts.
