Konyaspor Kulübü (Turkish pronunciation: [konjaspoɾ kulyby], Konya Sports Club) is a Turkish professional football club based in Konya. They are better known as Konyaspor. The club was founded in 1922 with the name Konya Gençlerbirliği and has played at their current home stadium, Konya Metropolitan Municipality Stadium, since 2014. Konyaspor currently competes in the Süper Lig, the top tier of Turkish football. The club's colors are green and white.
Konyaspor were officially founded as Konya Gençlerbirliği on 22 June 1922. As champions of the regional Konya Football League, they participated in the 1924 Turkish Football Championship, the first-ever national championship in Turkish football. In 1965, the club merged with Meramspor, Selçukspor, and Çimentospor and adopted the name Konyaspor, initially with black and white as team colors. They played their first season in the Second League in 1981. Following a merger with cross-town rivals Konya İdman Yurdu, Konyaspor adopted the green and white colors.
In the 1987–88 season, Konyaspor became champions of the Second League and were promoted to the First League for the first time in their history. They spent five seasons in the First League, playing 160 official matches, securing 47 wins, 33 draws, and facing 80 losses. During the 1988–89 season, Konyaspor reached the semi-finals of the Turkish Cup, losing to eventual champions Beşiktaş. The club was relegated back to the Second League in the 1992–93 season.
After spending a decade in the Second League, Konyaspor returned to the Süper Lig as the titleholders of the 2002–03 First League with 68 points. In the 2003–04 season, they reached the quarter-finals of the Turkish Cup but were defeated by Trabzonspor. The following season, Konyaspor once again reached the quarter-finals, this time losing to Denizlispor in a penalty shoot-out. Despite a 3–0 home win against Ankaraspor in the 2008–09 season, Konyaspor was relegated from the Süper Lig.
Konyaspor secured a spot in the Promotion Play-offs in 2010 and made an immediate return to the Süper Lig after one year. However, they were relegated again in the 2010–11 season. They returned to the top level two years later and achieved their best result in the 2015–16 season by finishing 3rd in the Süper Lig, qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.
In the 2016–17 season, Konyaspor participated in European competitions for the first time, playing in Group H with Shakhtar Donetsk, Braga, and Gent. Although they finished last in their group, they reached the Turkish Cup final for the first time in their history. On 31 May 2017, Konyaspor defeated İstanbul Başakşehir to win their first-ever Turkish Cup, prevailing 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out after a 0-0 draw in regular and extra time.
