Le Havre Athletic Club (French pronunciation: [lə ɑvʁ] is a French professional association football club located in Le Havre, in the region of Normandy. The football club was established in the year 1894 but as a section of a sports club with the same name as that of this football club was established in the year 1884. Le Havre is a football club that competes in the Ligue 1, first division of football in France after being promoted from the Ligue 2 at the end of the 2022/2023 season. Challenging the assertions that had been made by the club since time immemorial, Le Havre AC was in fact not formed in 1872. In 1884, some of the British residents in Le Havre founded Le Havre Athletic and the team played a type of football that was a cross between rugby and association football known as “combination”. Association football started being played in Le Havre in the year 1894.
Le Havre became the first club from outside Paris to be the French football champions in the year 1899. When it was held, the championship was supported by the USFSA. This they did after being given a walkover victory over Iris Club Lillois in the semi-final before being given another walkover in the final against Club Français. They repeated this success the following year and the final of that year was considered a “re-match” of the 1899 final which was forfeited by the club.
