History

The Early Years

 What would later become RCD Mallorca was formed on 5 March 1916 and initially, registered at the Spanish Football Federation under the name of Alfonso XIII Foot-Ball Club. Just weeks after, the club quickly created the directors of Alfonso XIII FBC, with engineer Adolfo Vázquez Humasqué and nine other football enthusiasts. The first stadium was the Buenos Aires field which was used for a competitive match against FC Barcelona, and this team was registered 20 days after this further fast-track development. Although the fixture ended in a 8-0 loss, it was not long before King Alfonso XIII himself sought the royal patronage of ‘Real’ in the team's name and thus becoming Real Sociedad Alfonso XIII Foot-Ball Club.

 Thus, in 1917, the Catalan Federation approved the entry of Real Sociedad Alfonso XIII to the league championship of the second division as an unofficial Balearic Islands champion. Securing a place in the final match, Los Bermellones won their first title with a 3-1 defeat of Futbol Club Palafrugell, in Barcelona.

 Until the 1930s, the board of directors managed to organize fixtures against peninsular clubs such as RCD Espanyol and Real Murcia, while also hosting rare exhibitions against foreign sides including: Ajax in 1923, Uruguay’s national team in 1925, Chilean outfit Colo-Colo in 1927, and one of the Czech Republic’s oldest teams, Prague Meteor, in 1930, the latter under coach Jack Greenwell, and with Antolín Arnau, Felipe Ferrer, and Pedro Pizá among its players.

In 1931 the Spanish Republic was proclaimed and any form of reference to the monarchy was prohibited; therefore the club was renamed Club Deportivo Mallorca in 1931. Nevertheless, major fixtures and competitions across Spain were soon disrupted by the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936; however, during this period, the squad was on the most successful run by winning every championship they participated in, as the football on this island remained immune to the deferment experienced in the country. As soon as the war was over, matches with teams of the Peninsula were resumed and the Second Division started with five groups of eight teams each.

 Another phase of the Second Division was in progress when on 22 September 1945 it was time to bid farewell to Buenos Aires Field and shift to Es Fortí; a ground with 16,000 seating capacity maximum which in over half a century came to be known as the Club’s home ground which also underwent several extensions from time to time. A line-up with forward Sebastián Pocoví, defender Saturnino Grech, and goalkeeper Antoni Ramallets defeated Jerez 3-0 in the first match of the new season the following day, Carlos Sanz scoring Es Fortí’s first goal in front of full stands. The title Es Fortí was not to last though and later the board changed the name of the stadium to Lluís Sitjar in honor of the man who had pushed for the construction of the field.

 In the season 1949/1950 the Balearic club returned to their “Real” prefix, becoming Real Club Deportivo Mallorca.

 1990s and 2000s: Peak

 During the season 1990–91, Mallorca got to the Copa del final for the first time and lost with one goal to Atlético Madrid. Argentine Héctor Cúper was appointed as the manager in 1997. In his first season at Valencia, the club was in the 1998 Copa del Rey final and after a 1–1 draw with FC Barcelona in Mestalla Valencia lost in a penalty shootout. However, as Barcelona also won the league, Mallorca were their opponents in the 1998 Supercopa de España and won 3–1 on aggregate for their first major honor. Barcelona’s double also meant Mallorca entered the 1998-99 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the final year of this competition – they lost the final 2-1 to Italy’s S. S. Lazio at Villa Park.

 In 1999 Mallorca also achieved its best-ever finish of 3rd place and for the first time entering UEFA Champions League but they were knocked out by Molde FK of Norway on the away goals rule before the group stage. Luis Aragonés equaled the third and in 2001 moved to Atlético Madrid that was in the second division. Thus, on 28 June 2003 Mallorca was the winner of the Copa del Rey after having defeated Recreativo de Huelva in the final which took place in Elche with the score of 3:0; Walter Pandiani and Samuel Eto’o scored the goals for Mallorca.

2010s: Decline and Return

 Mallorca was relegated from La Liga on the last day of the season of 2012/2013. The team was in danger of being relegated to the third tier in January 2016 before being purchased by American businessman Robert Sarver and basketball legend Steve Nash for just over €20 million. Mallorca were relegated to the third tier for the first time since 1981 on 4 June 2017 with one game of the season remaining. They came back the following year in the 2017-18 season after the play-off final victory over CF Rayo Majadahonda with the help of their new manager, Vicente Moreno. Mallorca got promoted to the 2019–20 La Liga for the second time in June 2019 after defeating Deportivo de La Coruña in the 2019 Segunda División play-offs with the score line 3–2 on an aggregate basis after having lost in the first match 2–0. Nevertheless, they were relegated a year later to the English Football League Two. A year later, Mallorca returned to the top tier after an Almería defeat at the hands of Cartagena. In the year 2024, Mallorca made it to Copa del Rey final for the second time after the victory in 2003.
