AC Milan 1-3 Liverpool: Reds Stage Impressive Comeback in UEFA Champions League Opener

Liverpool began their UEFA Champions League group stage properly with an enthralling 3-1 win at the San Siro against AC Milan. The Premier League side started the match on the back foot and conceded the first goal to the hosts, but they replied with three goals, thus announcing their arrival back to Europe’s top club competition in style.

The match began on a bad note for Liverpool as AC Milan opened scoring in the first fifteen minutes of the match. Alvaro Morata played a nice one-two with Christian Pulisic and the former Chelsea star calmly placed the ball into the back of the net to the delight of the fans at the stadium. For the first half an hour or so, it seemed like AC Milan were going to come out on top but Liverpool proved to be a much stronger team.

After the early stages of what could be described as a storm, the Reds started to come into their own. The equalizing goal for Liverpool came in the 23rd minute when Ibrahima Konate headed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick into the net making the score 1-1.

Liverpool didn't stop there. They continued to move forward with such vigor and their endeavors paid off once more in the first few minutes before the halftime. This time it was captain Virgil van Dijk who was the difference maker with a header from a Kostas Tsimikas corner to make it 2-1 for the visitors. It was a turning point in the match because, after that, Milan failed to get back on the right track.

In the second half, the Reds seemed to be in control of the game again with Mohamed Salah hitting the crossbar twice in a span of 5 minutes. Diogo Jota also had an opportunity to increase the lead but a shot was just off target, it went wide of the post. But, the two-goal lead was eventually increased in the 67th minute. Dominik Szoboszlai finished off a terrific team build-up play by slotting a low cross by Cody Gakpo into the net and helped Liverpool to a 3-1 win.

AC Milan attempted a fightback, but Paulo Fonseca’s side failed to penetrate Liverpool’s rigid backline. The Reds dominated the game and made sure they registered a perfect start in their European campaign.
