In a classic Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium, Liverpool was lucky to come away with a 2-2 draw after a last-gasp equalizer from Mohamed Salah, with Arsenal dealing with several injuries. It was a tale of two goals each for both teams, with Saka putting the home side in front and the Reds responding through Van Dijk to make it 1-1, then before the end of the half, Mikel Merino doubled the advantage. In the second half, a late goal by Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool a share of the spoils at the Emirates Stadium. The match attracted 60,374 fans, and traveling away fans had good reason to celebrate a point earned that keeps the team in the thick of the title race.
Both sides started with great energy and quality on the pitch, but it was Arsenal that kicked into action early to earn the opener by Bukayo Saka, who scored after a fantastic pass by Ben White. However, the advantage did not last long as Liverpool equalized through Van Dijk’s header. It appeared Arsenal wanted to make a statement on their home ground, and they wrestled it back just before the break when Mikel Merino rose to nod in a delightful free kick by Declan Rice, which was his first for the club.
As much as Arsenal’s defense was great in the first half, they struggled in the second half. The Gunners started the match without William Saliba due to suspension, and Gabriel as well as Jurrien Timber limped off the pitch, which put their defense under immense pressure against Liverpool. The absence of these key players was a perfect opportunity for Liverpool to surge forward, in which they did to the 81st minute. An excellent through ball by Darwin Nunez released Salah, and the Egyptian successfully outwitted Arsenal’s makeshift backline to score a low finish and restore Liverpool’s parity on the night.
This result places Liverpool only one point behind Manchester City in first place with 23 points and Arsenal moves up two places to third place with 18 points, six points behind the leaders. Both teams proved their title credentials, and the spectators were given a classic preview of what this season's championship battle would look like.
