It was another classic Madrid derby as Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid played out a 1-1 draw at the Metropolitano on Sunday evening. Eder Militao put Real Madrid in front in the early part of the second half, but Angel Correa scored the equalizer in the last minutes of the game, thus Real Madrid had to settle for a draw. However, goals will not be the only thing associated with the match since it was stopped for a while after some objects were thrown at Thibaut Courtois.
The match began with vigor as is customary with any Madrid Derby match-up in La Liga. Real Madrid, who wanted to move to the top of the table, scored a goal in the second half when Militao headed it in. The goal appeared to point the coming match in a decisive victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, but what followed directed attention to something other than the game.
After Militao’s goal, the mood on the pitch changed for the worse. Atletico Madrid fans threw a lighter at their former player Thibaut Courtois, now a Real Madrid goalkeeper, after he celebrated close to the Atletico fans behind the goal. This resulted in the match suspension for almost 15 minutes because the players were removed from the playing field to calm down the fans.
After the match had started again, there was huge pressure on Atletico Madrid to get closer to getting a goal and at a minimum earn something out of the game to help their bid for a top-four finish. Courtois produced a wonderful save to keep out Samuel Lino from scoring, but at the death, Atletico Madrid did get their goal. Angel Correa scored the only goal, the goal was at first considered offside but later, through VAR, it was counted. The equalizer came in the last few minutes of the game to give Atletico fans a reason to celebrate after what had been a very tense match.
There was not the end of the drama as Atletico midfielder Marcos Llorente received a red card for the foul in the last minutes of the match.
