In a tie between two teams with equal chances to advance, it was Benfica that was able to reach the UCL round of 16 after a goal feast at the Estadio da Luz.
The match ended in a 3-3 draw, and that led to the qualification of Benfica, who won the first leg of the tie 1-0 in France.
Benfica's three goals were scored by Kerem Akturkoglu, Pavlidis from the spot, and Orkun Kokcu. Monaco goals were scored by Minamino, Ben Seghir, and Ilenikhena.
This was a fantastic qualification for Benfica, who will face either Barcelona or Liverpool in the next round.
In this game, Monaco needed to win if they wanted to play in the UCL round of 16, while a draw would be enough for Benfica to advance.
Portuguese team Benfica took the lead against Monaco in the 22nd minute, despite the latter being the team that needed a win to advance.
The Portuguese team took the lead when Keren Akturkoglu put the ball in the net with a powerful shot to score.
Benfica’s lead only lasted until Minamino scored in the 33rd minute to get the score back to level terms.
The first half ended 1-1, with Benfica leading the score 2-1 on aggregate.
The second half was full of action, and it showed, as there were plenty of goals by both sides.
Monaco got the lead in the 51st minute, as Ben Seghir put Monaco’s upfront and no road to the round of 16 qualification.
However, Benfica managed to level the match yet again, after Pavlidis scored from the spot.
Monaco then scored in the 81st minute, with Ilenikhena scoring a powerful shot, but their celebrations didn’t last long as three minutes later, Orkun Kokcu scored the 3rd goal of Benfica for the night, ending the match with a 3-3 result.
Benfica needed a draw in this game to qualify for the next round, and they were able to do so at Stade Louis-II.
Monaco tried their utmost effort to win the game but still failed to qualify at home, in what was an acceptable campaign for the French side.
In the next round, Benfica will face a monumental task, as they will either draw Liverpool or Barcelona, the teams that finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the Champions League league phase.

Benfica advanced through to the round of 16 with a 4-3 aggregate score, and they are the only Portuguese side in the competition right now.
