Manchester City’s miseries persisted as the team suffered their fourth successive loss across all competitions with a 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion on the road at the Amex Stadium. Squaring up against a fully charged Amex with 31,500 fans in attendance, City’s loss can be attributed to a series of poor form in the recent few matches, where they have been beaten by Tottenham in the League Cup, Bournemouth in the Premier League and Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League before coming to this match. The result leaves City second in the Premier League and Brighton fourth after their win on the south coast.
The city seemed to be on the ascendancy in the first half as they dominated, showing better physicality and aggression than the Eagles, and had some good chances. Erling Haaland was on the right side of the goal and opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after receiving a through pass from Mateo Kovacic to make it 1-0. This made it Haaland’s 75 goals in the premier league and this one was in his 77th appearance, a record in the competition. Haaland could have made it 2-0 just minutes after the goal, when he beat the goalkeeper with a powerful low shot, only to hit the woodwork.
City was holding the upper hand, at least until the second half when the home side was willing to come back into the match. They created their first clear opportunity in the 52nd minute when Jack Hinshelwood headed from a few yards and forced a great save from Ederson. Brighton equalized in the 78th minute after the substitute Joao Pedro scored from the corner scramble to make it 1-1.
Just five minutes later, another substitute, Matt O’Riley, scored the winning goal for Brighton, after receiving a ball from Pedro and then scoring it. This winner put Brighton fans on cloud nine while City fans could only endure yet another heartbreaking loss.
Manchester City fans are getting increasingly restless over their team’s form in the last few matches. Fans are therefore expecting the squad to quickly turn around this misfortune and get back to their previous dominating form after the team has suffered four consecutive losses.
