Brighton & Hove Albion will return standing seats to their stadium for the first time since 1997. This move follows years of strict regulations prohibiting standing sections, which were eased in 2022. The American Express Stadium (Amex) will become the 14th Premier League venue to feature safe-standing rails, marking a significant step forward for fan engagement.
The ban on standing seats in English stadiums was introduced in the 1990s following tragic events such as the Hillsborough disaster. These measures aimed to prioritise fan safety, but in 2022, regulations were revised, allowing clubs to reintroduce safe-standing sections under strict conditions.
Brighton & Hove Albion will install rail seating in sections of the North Stand from row R upwards. This setup includes folding chairs integrated into railings, allowing for flexibility. Seats can be folded back for EPL matches and unfolded for UEFA competitions.
While the stadium’s overall capacity will remain unchanged and ticket prices unaffected, surveys reveal that 80% of fans support the move. The upgrade is expected to enhance the matchday experience, particularly as The Seagulls strive for a return to European football next season.
