Chelsea 1-1 Arsenal: Neto’s Equalizer Holds Arsenal at Stamford Bridge

The Sunday encounter at Stamford Bridge was a cracker as Arsenal was held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea, which was a good result for Chelsea but a frustrating one for Arsenal, who fell further from the title race. With 40,000 people watching, Gabriel Martinelli’s goal was expected to give Arsenal the necessary win to move closer to Liverpool, but Pedro Neto’s magnificent goal in the second half was good enough to help Chelsea grind out a draw.

Arsenal took the lead against the run of play. This was after Martinelli put the ball in the net after receiving a well placed pass by Martin Odegaard who had recovered from his injury in time to influence the match. Just before that, Arsenal's Kai Havertz had put the ball past Mendy only to have the goal disallowed for offside. The goal by Martinelli opened the eyes of Arsenal fans as it gave Arsenal the lead after a deadlock. However, the celebrations didn't continue for long, as after 10 minutes, Neto equalised for the Blues with a stunning shot from outside the eighteen area which caught goalkeeper David Raya by suprise.

The match continued to be competitive until the final whistle with both sides seeking for the second goal. Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard had the best chance for the winner in the final moments of the match but he blazed his effort from close range wide. This result keeps both Chelsea and Arsenal in the Premier League top four, but they are both nine points behind Liverpool.

For Arsenal, this draw was particularly painful because it extended the gap between them and Liverpool, who had increased their lead earlier in the weekend. Arsenal fans are understandably worried, especially with the sight of Bukayo Saka limping off after a challenge from Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, who could be a big miss for Mikel Arteta’s side as they enter the international break.

While the Chelsea fans left the stadium satisfied with how their team had performed and stuck in through the match, Arsenal fans were disappointed with this draw as they got further away from 1st place.
