Cristiano Ronaldo in Tears After Missing Extra-Time Penalty for Portugal at Euro 2024, Scores in Victorious Shoot-Out

Euro 2024 round of sixteen match between Portugal and Slovenia was a night of drama and emotions for Cristiano Ronaldo. The legendary forward failed to convert a decisive penalty in the extra time but came back from the disappointment to score in the penalty shoot-out, thus leading his team to the quarter-finals.

A Rollercoaster of Emotions

Ronaldo could well have regretted his missed penalty in the match but he made up for it in the penalty shot out. At the end of the first half of extra time, the score was 0-0, and he took a penalty after Vanja Drkusic brought down Diogo Jota. The pressure was high but the Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak came up with a world-class save to deny Ronaldo a goal, with the ball hit the post. When the players were taking the break in extra time, Ronaldo was upset, he cried and had to be consoled by his teammate Bruno Fernandes.

Redemption in the Shoot-Out

However, the game went to a penalty shoot-out and the hopes of Portugal lived on. Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko had an opportunity to seal the match in the extra time but Portugal’s Diogo Costa denied him.

In the shoot-out, Costa again stood out by saving Slovenia’s first kick. Ronaldo was eager to atone for his mistake and he placed his second penalty kick of the night in the back of the net past Oblak. This time he was calm and composed to the extreme. Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva also scored the penalties and Costa saved two other penalties of Slovenian players. Portugal won and got through to the quarter-finals to face France.
