Darwin Nunez: Copa America Incident Costs Liverpool Striker a Five-Match Suspension

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has been suspended for five matches by CONMEBOL after the brawl that occurred after Uruguay’s 1-0 loss to Colombia in the 2024 Copa America semi-finals. The hooliganism that occurred after the match involving several players led to a ban by the South American Football Association. The event happened after Colombia won the match by a slender margin and a post-match fight took place close to the section where players’ relatives were watching the match. Nunez, who appeared to be very uncomfortable, was filmed getting into the stand during the escalating fisticuffs. His actions have been considered the worst by CONMEBOL and as such, he has received a five-match ban and a $20,000 fine. This means that Nunez will not be available for Uruguay’s World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia but is expected to be in the team when they play against Brazil in November. Tottenham Hotspur’s Rodrigo Bentancur also got a massive penalty; he was banned for four games and fined $16,000. Bentancur will be on hand to return just in time for Uruguay’s match-up against Colombia. It is also important to note that three other Uruguayan players namely Mathias Olivera of Napoli, Ronald Araujo of Barcelona and Jose Maria Gimenez of Atletico Madrid have each been given three-match bans. Santiago Mele, Matias Vina, Sebastian Caceres, Emiliano Martinez, Facundo Pellistri, and Brian Rodriguez received further fines but got off the hook for match bans. Gimenez said they considered the situation as “a total disaster” citing that their families, including small children, were at the scene during the fight. He complained about the issue of insecurity, saying that police took time to intervene even when the fight had gone viral. ‘Colombian fans in a certain section attacked all our families, our families were in danger,’ said Gimenez, ‘We had to run into the stands to take our families with tiny newborn babies. ’ Uruguay’s coach Marcelo Bielsa also came to the defense of his players noting that they acted in such a manner due to the provocation that they received. In response to that, Bielsa stated: “The only thing that I can say is that the players reacted as any human being would have done. ” ‘If they are attacking your wife, mother,  baby, wife,  sister …’ What do you do? Do you ask whether they are going to sanction those who went to defend? There is a degree of complicity because the questions also act in a complicitous manner. You [the journalists] have to say this, not what I have to say. ’
