Denmark 1-1 England - Sluggish Three Lions Stumble to Euro 2024 Draw After Morten Hjulmand Thunderbolt

England's lackluster performance resulted in a frustrating 1-1 draw against Denmark, leaving Gareth Southgate’s side atop Group C but raising further doubts about their credentials as serious contenders for the tournament. The Three Lions appeared aimless and were outclassed by a Danish side who will feel aggrieved not to have taken all three points after Morten Hjulmand's stunning strike.

England squandered the chance to secure their place in the knockout stages of Euro 2024 with this disappointing draw. Harry Kane netted an early goal for the Three Lions, but once again, they retreated and allowed Denmark to dominate, leading to Hjulmand's spectacular equalizer.

Despite coming closest to scoring again through Phil Foden’s 20-yard shot that hit the post, it was Denmark who looked more likely to win. Andreas Christensen nearly found the net with a half-volley from a corner, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s curling effort narrowly missed Jordan Pickford's far post in the dying minutes.

Though England remain in control of Group C, sitting at the top with four points, Denmark and Slovenia are hot on their heels with two points each from two games.

England Unfit to be Favorites

England's disjointed display against Denmark underscored their shortcomings. They seemed lost in possession, showing no clear system or strategy. After the backlash for their overly defensive tactics against Serbia, it was astonishing to see them retreat once again, allowing Denmark to control the game with ease.

Denmark faced little resistance, experiencing no organized press from England. The Three Lions lacked cohesion, making it easy for Denmark to advance and settle in the attacking half. As the game progressed, Denmark looked more likely to snatch a win.

This match echoed England's clash with Scotland three years ago. Denmark, with many players familiar with English football, rose to the occasion against Southgate's men. However, it's difficult to envision England finding a system that allows them to play with the fluidity needed to justify their status as pre-tournament favorites.

While England might top the group, win a second-round match against a third-place team, and even advance to the semifinals on penalties, they don't appear capable of challenging the tournament's elite teams.

Player of the Match - Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Denmark)

Hojbjerg nearly clinched the victory for Denmark, a fitting reward as he outshone England’s highly-rated midfielders. He consistently drove forward whenever Denmark attacked, putting relentless pressure on England. Despite being a bit eager to shoot, his efforts almost paid off.
