Edu Gaspar, Arsenal’s highly regarded sporting director, is leaving the club after a transformative five-year period that revolutionized the club’s recruitment process and playing personnel. The former midfielder has been in charge of a period characterized by big-money acquisitions and the pursuit of a title-challenging Arsenal in conjunction with head coach Mikel Arteta.
Edu took up the role in 2019 as the club’s transfer specialist after Sven Mislintat, and he was expected to start reconstructing the team. Over the years, Edu made significant acquisitions including Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Ben White, and Martin Ødegaard as the team’s captain. He concentrated on young prospects that can guarantee Arsenal stability for the future and from eighth place, the Gunners transformed into title contenders.
Edu could identify and sign numerous talents that are in their early 20s today and one of his greatest achievements was his association with Mikel Arteta. Combined, they regenerated the team and signed young talents such as Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White in 2021/22 to support Arsenal’s bid for Champions League football. A season later, Manchester City products, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko were signed and brought in experience and a winning attitude. Arsenal in the end secured the position of the second team in the 2022/23 season and thereby failed to capture the Premier League.
Reflecting on his departure, Edu expressed his deep connection to the club: "That was a very difficult decision to make. I have gained a lot from Arsenal for having a chance to work with so many great people and be part of something special in Arsenal’s history. Arsenal fans will always be in my heart.” Arsenal director Josh Kroenke praised Edu’s efforts and said he was especially pleased with the energy and vision Edu brought.
Edu also had a hand in the big sales, getting rid of players like Aubameyang and Özil for the next generation of players. As for Edu, fans expect his replacement will work more on enhancing the Arsenal title bid and take the club to new heights.
