England 2-1 Slovakia: Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane Propel Three Lions to Quarter-Finals with Dramatic Comeback

Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane rescued England as the Three Lions mounted a stunning late comeback to beat Slovakia 2-1. Ivan Schranz had given Slovakia the lead midway through the first half and it seemed England faced elimination as the clock hit the 95th minute. Bellingham’s spectacular goal got the draw for England in the 95th minute with an amazing overhead, then Harry Kane scored in the first minute of extra time to get the win for England and set a quarter-final clash with Switzerland in which will be an amazing game.

Dramatic Comeback

Jude Bellingham managed to send the game into extra time with an incredible overhead goal. The goal propelled the game into extra time. Within a minute of the additional period Harry Kane secured the win. Kane capitalized on a flick across goal by substitute Ivan Toney heading home from close range. Slovakia had been just 60 seconds from reaching their first tournament quarter-final with Ivan Schranz scoring their goal after 25 minutes following excellent work from David Strelec.

Slovakia nearly extended their lead early in the second half when Strelec attempted a shot from 50 yards after a miscommunication between John Stones and Marc Guehi. The effort beat Jordan Pickford but went just wide of the post. Though England struggled for most of normal time they turned it around in the final moments.

Talking Point – Southgate’s Close Call

Everyone connected to England’s Euro 2024 campaign can breathe a sigh of relief after coming perilously close to defeat against a spirited Slovak team in Gelsenkirchen. Gareth Southgate’s next game will be his 100th In charge of England yet he was nearly eliminated on the brink of this milestone. The match in Gelsenkirchen threatened to echo the disastrous defeat to Iceland in Nice during Euro 2016.

England avoided a repeat of that horror thanks to big moments from two of their star players. If Southgate continues beyond his 100th game he will need to be more proactive in making tactical changes both before facing Switzerland and during the match itself. Currently England consists of star players who are struggling to function as a cohesive team. Given Switzerland's ease in defeating Italy England will need a thorough reassessment of their approach if they are to progress further in the tournament.

Player of the Match – Jude Bellingham (England)

Bellingham was England’s most energetic and effective player in the first half and became increasingly exasperated in the second as defeat loomed. His amazing overhead goal saved Southgate’s job and kept England in the tournament.
