Opposition Calls to Empty Mestalla Against Real Madrid
Valencia CF supporters are expressing discontent, with Libertad VCF urging fans to remain empty duri

After three and a half years of meticulous construction, Everton FC’s new stadium has officially been handed over by construction giant Laing O’Rourke. This milestone marks a significant moment for the club and its fans, who have eagerly awaited the completion of this iconic venue.
The handover ceremony brought together key figures, including Gareth Jacques, Project Director at Laing O’Rourke, Marc Watts, Everton’s Executive Chairman, and Colin Chong, the club’s Interim Chief Executive. While this official handover signals the end of the main construction phase, Everton FC will continue overseeing finishing touches for the next six months, preparing the stadium for its first game at the start of the 2025/26 season.
Project Director Gareth Jacques expressed immense pride in the achievement:
"This is a momentous day for my team, for Laing O’Rourke, for our supply chain, all the design consultants, and everyone involved with the project. We’ve spent 178 weeks on site, and a year-and-a-half before that in pre-construction and planning. To deliver it, as we have, on time, is phenomenal."
Jacques highlighted the transformation of an old, disused dock into a world-class 53,000-seat stadium, calling it "the best stadium in this country."
Despite the challenges posed by global events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, the project remained on schedule. However, these external factors drove up costs from the initial estimate of £500 million to £550 million, primarily due to rising material prices.
Colin Chong, Everton’s Interim CEO, praised the resilience of everyone involved:
"Construction has not been without its challenges, but we have remained on schedule despite a worldwide pandemic and a war in Ukraine. The stadium will not only strengthen Everton’s position but also provide a boost to the regeneration of the nearby Ten Streets area."
The new Everton Stadium is set to bring economic growth to the local community and stands as a beacon of the city’s revitalization.
