Blue Heaven Holdings, the owner of Everton, revealed that talks with the Friedkin Group about the sale of the club were not successful and are over. Even though the two parties agreed on the general idea of the deal in June, the Friedkin Group, which is the owner of another Serie A team, Roma, will not complete the acquisition. This is another blow for Everton after their previous negotiations with 777 Partners collapsed last month.
Everton granted exclusivity to the Friedkin Group after the breakdown of the 777 Partners deal in June. Farhad Moshiri, who holds a 94% stake in Everton, has been in several unsuccessful talks to sell the club. The joint statement released confirmed that while the sale will not go ahead, the Friedkin Group will continue as a lender to Everton.
"Both Blue Heaven Holdings and The Friedkin Group entered discussions in good faith to explore whether a sale could be agreed. Those discussions have concluded. The parties agree it is in both their interests for Everton to explore alternative options," the statement read.
The Friedkin Group has already played a significant role in Everton’s future by providing a £200 million loan that has facilitated the construction of Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, set to open for the 2025/26 season.
"The Friedkin Group will remain a lender to the club and is proud to have played a key role in enabling the new stadium to be built, which will help ensure a bright future for both Everton and the City of Liverpool," the statement continued. "Blue Heaven Holdings maintains a positive relationship with The Friedkin Group and would like to thank them for the time and effort they have put into this process."
This is the fourth time Everton has granted exclusivity to a potential buyer, only for talks to end without a deal. The 777 Partners' bid failed due to delays in meeting Premier League ownership rules and missing the deadline for a share purchase agreement.
Moshiri has faced increasing criticism as Everton has struggled financially, posting significant losses and breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. These breaches led to an initial ten-point deduction, reduced to six on appeal, with an additional six points docked in April.
