FC Barcelona showcased their young talents as Gavi and Lamine Yamal delivered a 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao, earning a spot in the Spanish Super Cup final. The match, held on Wednesday, highlighted Barcelona's depth despite being without Dani Olmo, whose playing license was reinstated too late for him or Pau Victor to feature.
Barca got off to a confident start at the Estadio Municipal Cartagonova. Gavi, stepping into Dani Olmo’s usual attacking midfield role, opened the scoring in the 17th minute, converting Alejandro Balde’s assist. The 20-year-old celebrated with Olmo’s signature watch-pointing gesture, a tribute to his sidelined teammate.
Teen sensation Lamine Yamal doubled Barca's lead shortly after the break. The 17-year-old, returning from an ankle injury, showcased poise and precision when he slotted home Gavi's through ball.
Despite missing other opportunities, including one from Robert Lewandowski, Barca maintained control throughout the match. Wojciech Szczesny, in his second start for the Catalans, made key saves to thwart Bilbao's best chances, including a dangerous effort from Inaki Williams.
Athletic Bilbao, under coach Ernesto Valverde, fought valiantly but were unable to break Barca’s defensive line. Two goals were ruled out for offside, further dampening Bilbao’s hopes. Nico Williams, a late substitution for Athletic, added some spark but couldn’t turn the game around.
Barcelona now prepares for the Super Cup final, with Olmo set to make his return.
