Following their home loss to Greece, the English team got back to their form by beating Finland 3-1 in the UEFA Nations League match played at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium on Sunday. The visitors were in front through Jack Grealish, with further goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice before Finland got their only goal. This win gives England a chance of qualifying to the next level of League B Group 2 and this will be through automatic promotion.
Lee Carsley’s team had a tough time at Wembley in midweek losing 2-1 to Greece. But they answered back in Finland and Euro 2024 no-shows Angel Gomes and Jack Grealish fired the first goal after 18 minutes.
Although England dominated most of the first half to go into the lead, the team was nearly overrun in the second half, with Finland getting several opportunities to level the score. The hosts, led by the lively Topi Keskinen, caused problems to the English defense but were blunt with their finishing. Fredrik Jensen was denied a goal on a personal level a few minutes after the break when he headed high over the bar from about 12 yards out after a splendid pass by Keskinen.
Fortunately for England, Alexander-Arnold delivered a pinpoint free-kick with sixteen minutes left to play to make the score 2-0. Ollie Watkins came on in the final stages and played a part in a fine move which led to Declan Rice scoring England’s third goal in the 84th minute.
The Finns did get one back deep in stoppage time through Arttu Hoskonen who rose high to head in a corner-kick, but it was not enough to salvage a point for the home side. The win puts England on the same number of points as Greece but still behind them on goal difference. The second game of the day is Greece against the Republic of Ireland in a match that will decide the fate of both teams in the group.
The victory is important for England as they continue their push for promotion and Lee Carsley’s men could have been downcast after their midweek defeat.
