Germany 1-1 Switzerland: Hosts Score Stoppage-Time Equalizer to Top Group A at Euro 2024

Germany's Niclas Füllkrug scored an equalizer in the last minute of the match against Switzerland in the Euro 2024 Group A match at Frankfurt Arena. This paramount objective averted what would have been a shocking loss and made sure that the hosts finished on the summit of the group. Julian Nagelsmanns team, who were predicted to easily beat their opponents, only drew, which was enough for them to finish at the top of Group A. Füllkrug's powerful injury-time header saw Germany through to the knockout stages of the competition with a 1-1 draw. Switzerland dominated the first half and played a great football which led the team to the next round as the second place team.

Germany started the match strongly, they were dominating the match and had a lion share of the ball possession but Switzerland's defense was well organized and effective. On the 17th minute, Robert Andrich thought he had scored his first international goal, however, the referee, with the assistance of VAR, brought the decision back for a foul by Jamal Musiala on Michel Aebischer. Next on the 28th minute, Switzerland took the lead. Fabian Rieder got on the ball and ran at the opposition, and then crossed for Remo Freuler to volley for Dan Ndoye to score.

Even at this point, Germany did not manage to up their game in the second half and looked quite vulnerable every time the ball was crossed in their half as they did to score the equalizer. But in the very last moments of the first half, substitute David Raum played the ball into Füllkrug who then showed his touch, strength and nerve to prevent what had been a uneasy evening for the home side. Switzerland may have failed to clinch a record win but their performance is good enough for the knock out stages.

What Can Germany Do to Improve?

The Germans were breezing through the tournament after demolishing Scotland and Hungary but this match was a wake up call for them. Germany's team had some drawbacks, which Switzerland's excellent performance exposed.

In the position of the center forward, Kai Havertz was not as effective, as he is not only a scorer, but also a target man, and a channel runner. Germany's midfield line with Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz preferred to move inside and without the pace of either Toni Kroos or Ilkay Gündogan, the German midfield looked slow and predictable.

Julian Nagelsmann must think whether this formation is the best for his team. Does his team require the services of a winger in the literal sense of the word, that is a player who provides the team with the much needed speed and variety? Is it possible for a midfield to be efficient, however, with two aging players, no matter their talent? Would it be better to bring in a more conventional center-forward to boost the team's options in the final third? Although this mixture may take Germany in the competition to the later stages, it does not seem to provide for a championship campaign.

Manuel Akanji of Switzerland was awarded the Player of the Match

Manuel Akanji was exceptional, marking, closing down in defense, and initiating his team's pressing whenever the ball was in the vicinity of his defensive third.
