Arsenal went into the match with an unbeaten record in this season’s UEFA Champions League but they were handed a defeat by Inter Milan 1-0 in a match that was played in front of a packed San Siro with fans going crazy. The turning point was in the first minutes of the second half when Hakan Calhanoglu scored a penalty kick after Mikel Merino committed a foul and handled the ball in the added time at the end of the first half. Calhanoglu’s composed strike gave the Serie A champions the edge, keeping their unbeaten run in Europe this campaign.
Inter’s initial supremacy was nearly punished when Denzel Dumfries struck the woodwork in the first few minutes. Despite Arsenal building up a play gradually, they could not penetrate a solid Inter defense. Saka produced several dangerous corners, but, the clear-cut opportunities were limited as the match was a tense affair in the first period.
Right before the break, the referee pointed to the penalty spot after Merino used his hand to block a free-kick that had been flicked on by Inter. The penalty was awarded and Calhanoglu’s penalty put the game in Inter’s advantage. A more determined Arsenal came out after the break and Bisseck’s intervention to Havertz’s shot proved Inter’s defense was up for it. The earlier goal-line clearance by Dumfries from a corner was indicative of Inter’s solidity at the back and despite much further Arsenal pressure with a series of crosses, the latter lacked a clear target man to make something out of these chances.
Inter’s win not only ensures that they continue their unbeaten run in Europe but also consolidates their position in the group. This win was a good one for the home team as they defeated one of Europe’s giants. On the other hand, Arsenal has growing worries over their current form. This loss builds up their woes, and fans wait for a response as they get ready for a Premier League match against Chelsea and a formidable European match against Sporting.
Now, the Nerazzurri’s attention turns to their Serie A match against Napoli, where they will take the confidence of their continued strong defensive display in the Champions League with them. Inter fans are proud of their team’s good European run, while Arsenal fans hope that they can recover and get back to form.
