Internazionale and Napoli entertained supporters with an intense Serie A match at the sold-out Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw. Scott McTominay gave the league leaders Napoli an early goal which doused the home team’s energy, but Hakan Calhanoglu's equalizer for Inter just before the break pleased the home fans and earned a draw for his team.
The game was started by Napoli, who were determined to prove that they deserved to top the Serie A standings. Scott McTominay only needed a few minutes to put the ball into the back of the net after a flicked ball from a corner that left Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer stunned. This goal put pressure on Inter but they showed character, and they were getting better with time in the first half.
In first-half stoppage time, Turkish midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu set the stadium alight with an excellent strike from distance into the top corner, and Inter fans went wild. It was an act of pure quality that brought Inter back into the match and showed again what a match-saver Calhanoglu is.
The second half was more intense as Inter wanted to snatch the win. Calhanoglu was close once again to finding the back of the net. However, he blew the brightest chance to win the match when he fired a penalty into the woodwork, a shocking miss for the midfielder who had scored all the 19 penalties he took in his career, including that one against Arsenal during the week. This time he could score the penalty and the game ended level at 1-1.
Inter took control of much of the second half creating several opportunities but was unable to penetrate Napoli’s defense line. Simone Inzaghi’s team could have been much more aggressive, but as the final whistle was called, they settled for fourth place in the Serie A table, only one point behind Napoli, before the International break.
However, Napoli has been able to maintain the top spot, though only one point ahead of an extremely close race where teams from the second to the fifth positions have 25 points each in the first 12 matches. This point keeps them operating at a fairly limited range at the top as they strive to stay ahead.
