A Key Step Toward Beginning Coliseum Modernization

Getafe is advancing toward beginning the modernization of the Coliseum stadium. On Monday, the city's mayor, Sara Hernández, announced that the club recently submitted a revised license application addressing the unresolved parking issue. This marks a significant step in moving the €47 million project closer to construction.

Getafe’s Push for Modernization

The initial license application, submitted in March, received positive feedback from city technicians in September. However, one critical issue remained: the absence of sufficient parking facilities proportional to the planned increase in the Coliseum's capacity. With an additional 3,500 seats, the club was required to provide 700 parking spaces—one for every five spectators.

Recognizing the logistical challenges of building such a large parking facility, Getafe sought alternative solutions to meet the requirements. In collaboration with the City Council, the club worked on sustainable mobility measures to address concerns about traffic congestion in the Getafe Norte neighbourhood, which already struggles during bi-weekly events at the stadium.

Sustainable Mobility Solution

Last Thursday, Getafe presented a set of proposals that align with the City Council's push for sustainability. These include:

  • Installing six electric vehicle chargers.
  • Constructing ten bike parking spaces.
  • Actively promoting the use of public transportation.

The City Council approved this approach, waiving the parking requirement, provided these measures are implemented. If everything proceeds as planned, the construction license could be approved as early as January, bringing the start of the Coliseum modernization one step closer.
