Nottingham Forest emerged as winners in the East Midlands derby after they beat Leicester City 3-1, with Chris Wood scoring two stunning goals in the second half. Ryan Yates put the Reds in front from the spot in the third minute, before Jamie Vardy equalized for the Foxes shortly after. However, it was Wood’s clinical finishing after the break that settled the match and put Forest only one point behind the Premier League’s top four.
Forest started the match as the underdogs and for the first half an hour Leicester dominated the game in terms of territory and possession without really threatening the home side’s defense. The first goal was scored by Yates when he shot a free kick from 20 yards and beat the keeper. Leicester equalized almost immediately, with Vardy getting a clear run at goal from a pass by Harry Winks in a matter of seconds to give a typical poachers finish.
In the first half, the match was tense and goal shy as neither team created enough chances. The second half started with a bang as Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen made a brilliant save to stop a sure goal by Nicolas Dominguez. However, in the second half, Forest was more aggressive, especially with wingers Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga, who put pressure on Leicester’s defenders. And only two minutes into the second half, Wood scored a crucial goal by a turn and shot that left Leicester exposed. Shortly after, a lapse of concentration by Wout Faes put Wood through for another goal, and he took advantage of this to head home and make it 3-1 for the Reds.
Leicester’s loss puts them in 14th place, and after the weekend games, they may even drop lower while Nottingham Forest’s win sees them move up to fifth place and dreams of a season that may prove to be good enough for a European place.
