Lionel Messi, the football maestro renowned for his unmatched skill and numerous accolades, has opened up about the possibility of retiring from the beautiful game. Despite currently plying his trade at Inter Miami in the MLS, Messi acknowledges that the day will inevitably come when he hangs up his boots.
While Messi, now 37, is not suggesting that retirement is imminent, he admits to being self-critical and attuned to his performance on the field. In a recent interview, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner emphasized his commitment to knowing when it's time to step away from the game. "I know that the moment I feel that I am no longer able to perform, that I no longer enjoy or help my teammates, I will quit," Messi stated candidly. "If I feel good, I'll always try to keep competing because it's what I like and what I know how to do."
Reflecting on his decorated career, Messi expressed gratitude for the moments he's enjoyed on the pitch without dwelling on life after football. His illustrious tenure, particularly during his 17-year stint at Barcelona, saw him clinch numerous titles, including 10 La Liga and four Champions League trophies.
However, Messi's departure from Barcelona in 2021 marked a significant upheaval in his career. Amidst the club's financial and political turmoil, Messi found himself unexpectedly leaving the club he had called home for so long. Joining Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) offered him a fresh start, albeit one he hadn't anticipated. "It was difficult to change when I went to PSG because I was doing very well at Barcelona, and I thought I was going to stay there," Messi reflected. "I wasn't ready to leave… I had to rebuild my life from one day to the next."
