Liverpool Finish Top Despite Defeat on Gakpo’s Return to PSV

Liverpool F.C. secured first place in their UEFA Champions League group despite a 3-2 defeat against PSV Eindhoven, which ended their perfect record in the competition.

With Arne Slot rotating his squad and leaving 12 first-team regulars behind, Liverpool FC still managed to take the lead twice in the first half. Cody Gakpo converted a penalty against his former club before Harvey Elliott restored the advantage after an initial save.

However, PSV responded strongly, with Johan Bakayoko and Ismael Saibari scoring the equalizers before Ricardo Pepi flicked home a decisive goal just before halftime.

The second half lacked the same intensity, and Liverpool F.C. finished the match with 10 men after 18-year-old Amara Nallo received a straight red card moments after coming on.

Despite the loss, Liverpool officially secured first place in the group and will now prepare for a Round of 16 tie, with the first leg scheduled for March 4/5. Meanwhile, PSV will play in the Champions League play-offs on February 11/12 and 18/19.

Gakpo’s Return Ends in Defeat

Returning to his former club, Cody Gakpo marked the occasion with a goal from the penalty spot. However, despite getting on the scoresheet, he couldn't prevent Liverpool F.C. from suffering their first Champions League loss this season.

After the match, Gakpo reflected on the occasion, stating:

“It was special to play here again, but of course, the result is disappointing. We wanted to finish with a win, but the focus is now on the knockout rounds.”
