In Saturday's Merseyside derby at Anfield, Mohamed Salah played a pivotal role in Liverpool's 2-0 Premier League victory over 10-man Everton. The turning point occurred in the 75th minute when Salah expertly converted a penalty, exploiting a handball offense committed by Michael Keane. In the dying moments of stoppage time, Salah struck again to secure Liverpool's victory.
This victory temporarily propelled Juergen Klopp's team to the top of the Premier League standings with 20 points, marking the beginning of the weekend's Premier League action. On the other hand, Everton currently sits in 16th place.
GOAL! In the 75th minute, Salah converts the penalty with precision! It's a thunderous strike that leaves Pickford with no chance. Not even the water bottle on the goal line could prevent that goal.
In the 73rd minute, VAR concurs this time! Keane has his arm extended as Diaz's cross strikes it, and it's an indisputable penalty decision.
In the 71st minute, Liverpool launches weak penalty appeals as Patterson appears to challenge Diaz inside the penalty area. However, VAR once more dismisses the appeals, suggesting no foul play.
In the 67th minute, Klopp makes a swift substitution, bringing in Matip to replace Konate, which signifies a tactical change.
In the 65th minute, Konate's situation is indeed fortunate; it appears he should have received a second yellow card for tripping Beto, considering he was already booked.
In the 59th minute, Salah is experiencing bad luck. He attempted to control the ball while turning inside the penalty area, but his touch was not precise, and he was also offside.
Play has momentarily stopped as Onana tumbled over the advertising boards while vying with Diaz. Fortunately, he appears to be fine and ready to continue, but that could have been a potentially dangerous situation in the 56th minute of the game.
In the 53rd minute of the game, Liverpool's penalty appeals were rather subdued as a shot deflected off an Everton player's arm inside the penalty area. VAR reviewed the incident and decided to dismiss the appeal, and it was the correct decision.
In the 49th minute, Konate was shown a yellow card for pulling back Onana. Liverpool's restart after the incident has been sluggish.
The second half has commenced! Keane and Patterson have replaced Harrison and McNeil in the lineup.
In the 44th minute, Liverpool earns another corner, and Diaz attempts to make a diving header, but Onana clears it effectively. The ball is sent back into the box, and Onana once again heads it clear. This time, Alexander-Arnold takes a long-range shot, but Onana is there once more to block it.
In the 39th minute, Van Dijk came close to breaking the deadlock as he rose highest to meet a corner. Liverpool is intensifying their efforts, clearly on the offensive. Everton needs to hold their ground and defend resolutely.
In the 37th minute, Ashley Young has been sent off with a second yellow card for a reckless tackle on Diaz. It is a fair decision, and he can't have many complaints about it.
The 34th minute of the game is quite interesting. Pickford makes his first save of the match as Mac Allister takes a long-distance shot. The goalkeeper initially fumbles the ball but manages to smother it at the second attempt.
In the 22nd minute, it's Liverpool's opportunity to win a free kick as Jota makes a run across the face of the penalty area and is tripped by Tarkowski. The question is, will Trent take this free kick?
In the 21st minute, Everton secured a free kick following a careless foul committed by Tsimikas. The free kick is taken from around 40 yards out and floated towards the back post, but it doesn't result in anything significant.
In the 9th minute, Liverpool appears to have a half-chance, with Salah threading a pass through to Diaz for a potential run. Pickford rushes out to collect but stumbles in the process; however, he manages to reach the ball just in time.
In the 6th minute, Tsimikas has his first opportunity to follow in Robertson's footsteps as he delivers a cross from the left. He does a commendable job, and Alexander-Arnold manages to get his head on the ball, forcing Pickford to punch it clear.
What happened in the 4th minute will certainly shock you. Speaking of chances, Salah had a golden opportunity to slot the ball past Pickford when he was found in space on the right side of the area. However, he mistimed his shot, shanking the ball wide. Fortunately for him, the offside flag came to his rescue, sparing him from embarrassment.
In the 2nd minute, the first opportunity of the game goes to Everton as McNeill locates Calvert-Lewin inside the area. However, his header goes straight at Allison. It was indeed a significant chance, considering he was just about eight yards from the goal.
Kick-off! And the match has begun.
