Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique faced scrutiny over his decision to substitute Kylian Mbappe at half-time during their recent 0-0 draw against Monaco in Ligue 1. The move sparked questions, especially considering Mbappe's recent announcement about not extending his stay with the club.
Enrique clarified that the decision to replace Mbappe was made with the team's best interests in mind. Despite Mbappe's limited impact in the first half and a brief ankle treatment, he did not return for the second half. Instead, he walked around the pitch, interacted with fans, and eventually joined his mother in the stands.
While Enrique avoided delving into specific reasons for Mbappe's substitution, he emphasized the need for the team to adapt to playing without the French superstar. He reiterated that it was a coach's decision aimed at optimizing the team's performance.
Despite persistent questioning about Mbappe's situation, Enrique maintained his professionalism and refused to engage further, stating that his focus was solely on what benefits the team.
The draw against Monaco did not significantly affect PSG's position in Ligue 1, where they maintain a comfortable 12-point lead at the top of the table. However, the pressure mounts as they prepare for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League clash against Real Sociedad, holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.
