Manchester City Wins the Community Shield Match Against Manchester United by a Penalty Shootout

Manchester City got the better of their rivals Manchester United in the 2024 FA Community Shield match which took place at Wembley Stadium in a penalty shootout. The match was tied 1-1 at the end of the 90 minutes of normal time, and City won 7-6 on a penalty shootout, their first win in this fixture since 2019.

The match began with both teams wanting to make a strong statement for the season that was about to begin. Manchester United seemed to be on the ascendancy when Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to score a cracking finish in the 82nd minute. Garnacho, who only came on the pitch, dribbled and shot powerfully across the City’s goalkeeper and it seemed that the Red Devils were going to celebrate a victory.

But Manchester City’s character came to the fore as they staged a comeback. After Garnacho’s goal, City’s substitute also equalized the goal within seven minutes through a header from a good cross by Oscar Bobb. The match ended 1-1 when, in the last minutes of the match, Silva scored an equalizer to make it 1-1 in the 89th minute and the match went to a penalty shootout.

During the penalties, both teams were scoring their penalties until Sancho and Evans failed to score for Manchester United. Manuel Akanji later came on to take City’s decisive penalty and made no mistake, converting the penalty to lead Manchester City to win the match 7-6 and the first trophy of the 2024/25 season for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Speaking Point - Winning is a Habit

The FA Community Shield may not be as prestigious as other tournaments but Manchester City and Manchester United both wanted to win. This was not just a seasonal opening event but also a chance for City to avenge the FA Cup final defeat to United earlier in the year. While the Community Shield does not predict success in the next season, this victory will undoubtedly be useful for Pep Guardiola and his team to continue the winning streak, believing that the more they win, the more they will win.
