Manchester United have signed Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui for the Premier League 2024/25 season. The club signed These big names to aid the rebuilding process overseen by Erik ten Hag and INEOS, who have taken charge of football operations at Old Trafford.
De Ligt’s signing is a reunion with the Ten Hag, the manager who was instrumental in the development of the player at Ajax. The Dutch defender has agreed to join United on a five-year deal and is ready to start this journey. Reflecting on the move, De Ligt expressed his enthusiasm: “The moment I got wind that Manchester United was interested in me, I was eager at the prospect of being part of such a legendary football club,” he said “I was particularly impressed with the vision presented by the football authorities and I’m ready to make a difference in this team.”
De Ligt signed his first big contract in 2019, joining Juventus from Ajax and then moved to Bayern Munich in 2022 for €75m. He did not have a regular starting position in the team, and Bayern for the first time in the last 12 years failed to win any trophies. Now in United, De Ligt wants to play at the highest level again and help the club win trophies.
Manchester United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, expressed his views on the signing saying, “Matthijs is a top-class defender and a winner who will bring in leadership and quality in our team. He still has a lot more to offer and we want to see him do that at Manchester United.”
Arriving alongside De Ligt at Old Trafford is Mazraoui who has signed a four-year contract with an option to make it five. The 26-year-old right-back also gets to join the Old Trafford club under Ten Hag, the two having been together at Ajax. Mazraoui expressed his excitement about joining the Red Devils: “I feel pride being a Manchester United player and to play at Old Trafford is something I look forward to and now to be working with Erik ten Hag again at this stage in my career is exciting.”
The signing of De Ligt and Mazraoui arrived at the right time for United after the club only managed an eighth-place finish in the previous Premier League season. They may both be in United’s first match of the new season against Fulham if their registrations are processed before the team’s next match.
While Manchester United is still in the process of rebuilding with the help of INEOS and Ten Hag, the acquisitions of De Ligt and Mazraoui show that the club wants to climb back to the Premier League top.
