Morocco is on the brink of a historic moment with the development of the Grand Stade de Casablanca, a monumental stadium project that is poised to become the largest football stadium in the world.
Set against the backdrop of hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, Morocco's ambitious endeavor aims to surpass iconic venues like Spain’s Bernabeu or Camp Nou, positioning itself as the premier destination for the tournament's grand finale.
The proposed site, nestled in El Mansouria, a serene coastal town just east of Casablanca, is poised to transform into a bustling hub of sporting excitement. With a staggering capacity projected at 115,000 spectators, the Grand Stade de Casablanca is poised to eclipse the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea, currently holding a capacity of 114,000 supporters. The estimated budget for this monumental project stands at approximately five billion Moroccan dirhams, equivalent to around $500 million.
Amidst this monumental undertaking, Morocco's National Agency for Public Facilities (ANEP) has entrusted the esteemed global architectural firm, Populous, in collaboration with the French-Moroccan firm Oulalous + Choi (O+C), to spearhead the design and construction of the stadium. Their visionary approach promises to blend modernity with Moroccan heritage, creating an iconic landmark that resonates with the nation's rich cultural tapestry.
Christopher Lee, managing director of Populous, expressed pride in being awarded this prestigious project, emphasizing the Grand Stade de Casablanca's potential to captivate residents and visitors alike. Architect Tarik Oualalou echoed this sentiment, highlighting the stadium's deep-rooted connection to Moroccan traditions and landscapes.
In the broader context of global football, Morocco's role as a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup underscores its emergence as a powerhouse in the sporting arena. Teaming up with Spain and Portugal, the North African nation is poised to showcase its hospitality and organizational prowess on the world stage, setting the scene for an unforgettable tournament experience.
