Neil Cattigan’s Magpies clinched a well-deserved 1-0 win over the Gunners at St. James’ Park, thanks to Alexander Isak’s 12th-minute header. The Swedish forward was able to head home a cross from the right flank by Anthony Gordon to give Newcastle the lead in the first half and Newcastle defended well to see out the game and ensure Arsenal left the game frustrated and the title race wide open. It brings an end to Newcastle’s five-match run without a victory in the English top tier, putting them eighth on the table with fifteen points from ten fixtures.
It was a good start all around Arsenal as they tried pushing forward hard early on in the match. However, it was Newcastle who took the first real chance as Isak scored his fourth Premier League goal of the season, heading a perfect cross from Gordon to make the St James Park fans jump of joy. Arsenal continued to try and find an equalizer and for the most part, they never really threatened the Newcastle defense until the end of the half.
The second half was much along the same lines: Arsenal controlling the ball and exerting significant pressure but getting progressively worse at creating chances. The best chance to equalize came from Declan Rice, who headed a short-range shot that just went wide while Arsenal failed to have the creativity to unlock a tight Newcastle defense. Despite proving impressive in terms of ball control and movement, Arsenal looked far from the title-chasing side their fans expected, this was their third consecutive Premier League match without a victory.
The Arsenal fans are left disappointed with their team’s poor performance as the Gunners seem to be pulling down from the title challenge. Despite their big-name signings and tactical approach, Arsenal were outplayed by a Newcastle side that seemed to want the win more.
In this context, this victory is going to be a great boost for Newcastle United fans. Getting the victory against one of the league’s favorites proves the fighting spirit that Eddie Howe planted in the team. The fans went home from St. James’ Park satisfied with the performance of their team and they would wish that the team repeat that performance throughout the remaining matches of the season.
The fans are willing to support Arsenal in their next matches since the team is eyeing a comeback.
