Porto 3-3 Manchester United: Harry Maguire comes to United’s rescue as the Red Devils throw away a two-goal lead in a Europa League thriller

Manchester United began the match relaxed only for the game to become a nervy affair during the UEFA Europa League match against Porto. Starting the second half 2-0 ahead after first-half goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Højlund, United appeared to be on the ascendancy. However, a collapse on the defensive end allowed Porto to turn the score around score to 3-2 before half-time before the introduction of Harry Maguire who scored a header in the last moments of the game to make it 3-3 to give Erik ten Hag’s men a consolation point.

United entered the match wanting to put in a better performance after a 4 – 0 loss to Tottenham in the English Premier League. Ten Hag’s men did so, with Marcus Rashford putting the ball in the net in the 14th minute, as he fired home from a fine move. Højlund increased the lead five minutes to the half an hour mark making a mess out of a defensive mistake to give United the upper hand in the match.

However, Porto did not surrender and started their fightback soon after, when a wonderful header by  Pepe made it 2-1. The first half ended in a barren draw after striker Samu Omorodion equalized. United’s defense, which had been fairly strong in the early stages of the match had started to yield to the pressure.

The second half was more dramatic. When Rashford came off in the middle of the half, Porto, capitalized on the disjointed look of United and it was Omorodion again who rose to score in the 62nd minute to give Porto the shock of the evening. After United pushed forward in search of an equalizer, their skipper Bruno Fernandes was shown a straight red card for a terrible foul that saw him receive his second yellow card of the match.

But even when they were a man down, United did not relinquish. Substitute Harry Maguire, who has been mostly criticized in recent times, rose to the occasion in the last gasp of the match. The giant defender outjumped the Porto defense team to head in a Christian Eriksen corner in the 91st minute to give Manchester United that much-needed draw in an exhilarating match that ended 3-3.
