Angel Correa scored a last-second goal to give Atletico Madrid a dramatic 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in front of 47,000 fans at Parc des Princes. PSG, despite taking the lead, were unable to manage the match and are now on the brink of an early elimination in the Champions League. Atletico Madrid fans, on the other hand, are celebrating after getting three points from such a crucial match.
The hosts began on the front foot, with Achraf Hakimi attempting to beat Atletico’s Jan Oblak in the first minute. They scored first in the 14th minute when Dembele stole the ball in Atletico’s half and then assisted Zaire-Emery, who chipped the ball over Oblak, making it 1-0 for PSG. However, Atletico came back quickly. Almost four minutes later, PSG was unable to effectively deal with a cross as the ball was right in front of Nahuel Molina who calmly put it into the net to make the score 1-1.
The game was still highly competitive and some of the players used force to calm their teammates. In the second half, PSG stepped up to increase the tally of goals, and Hakimi and Bradley Barcola threatened Oblak with great saves. Marquinhos also had a chance, he headed straight at Oblak. However, PSG pressed as they attacked, while their rear line had spaces that Atletico seemed eager to take advantage of.
In a last twist of events, as PSG went forward in search of an equalizer, Atletico Madrid hit them on the counterattack. Antoine Griezmann crossed the ball to Angel Correa who made contact with the ball and beat Donnarumma with a shot that was the last kick of the match, securing Atletico Madrid victory. This was a bitter blow to PSG, as they have been struggling in the Champions League this season and fans will now fear that their side could be knocked out of the competition if they continue in this manner.
This leaves Atletico Madrid fans happy, simply because their team has triumphed over such a strong side in their backyard. At the same time, PSG fans are worried and are waiting for the team to turn the tide in the next fights.
