In the UEFA Champions League match at the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid played against AC Milan, but the night ended on a bitter-sweet note for the home side as they were beaten 3-1 by Milan in the presence of 70,814 fans. Carlo Ancelotti’s men were the favorite but failed to beat an inspired Milan side which punished Madrid’s mistakes at the back. They walked away with a memorable win much to the chagrin of Real Madrid fans who have witnessed their team’s recent struggles.
The evening started with the first goal scored by Milan's Malick Thiaw, scoring an effective header after escaping from Aurelien Tchouameni and Eder Militao. This early blow meant Los Blancos had gone into the last three games as the team that went behind in the first half an hour; a worrying sign for Madrid. Real came back though, and Vinicius Junior brilliantly won a penalty after a rash foul by Emerson Royal. Vinicius took the spot-kick nonchalantly and calmly put the ball in the middle rather than passing it to Kylian Mbappé.
However, Milan did not lose hope and they went in front just before halftime was blown. Ex-Real Madrid forward, Alvaro Morata, who has always enjoyed scoring against his former team, was quickest to react after a parry by the goalkeeper from a shot by Rafael Leao to tap into an empty net for his seventh goal against the los Blancos. Morata’s goal silenced the home fans and gave Milan more determination.
The Italian side continued dominating the game in the second half and Tijjani Reijnders scored a goal to make it 3-1 to Milan and leave the Bernabéu shocked and frustrated with a two-goal disadvantage. Though Real Madrid tried to put pressure in the last 15 minutes, they could not penetrate the well-organized Milan defense and the Italian visitors took valuable three points back home and AC Milan fans rejoiced in a historic victory.
This second successive Champions League loss has Real Madrid fans worried, as the team continues to struggle with form. On the other hand, AC Milan fans are happy with the result which places their team in a very strategic spot in the tournament.
