Kylian Mbappe scored his first La Liga goal by scoring twice in Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Real Betis on Sunday. The French forward, who signed for Madrid this summer from Paris Saint Germain, scored his first La Liga goals for the Spanish club, after not scoring in his first three La Liga matches. This victory has placed Carlo Ancelotti’s side in 2nd place in La Liga with eight points, four points behind the leaders Barcelona who have played and won all their four games.
Mbappe Shines in the Second Half
Mbappe had been starved of goal-scoring opportunities in his first three La Liga games but he managed to find the net twice in a space of ten minutes in this game. His first goal came in the 67th minute after Federico Valverde had laid him for an easy finish from the center of the box past the Betis goalkeeper Rui Silva. This goal awakened the Santiago Bernabéu, and just a few minutes later Madrid got a penalty after Vinicius Junior was fouled by Silva. Initially, Mbappe was flagged offside but the VAR review changed the decision and the French star coolly slotted home the penalty to make it 2-0 Madrid’s way.
Vinicius was impressive for Madrid in the second half and could have scored earlier but his shot hit the post. Betis, who was quite a lively side in the first half, was overwhelmed by Madrid’s attack after the first goal and was virtually non-existent after Mbappe scored twice.
Early Opportunities and Madrid's Breakthrough
Betis had their opportunities in the early stages of the game for instance when Abde Ezzalzouli failed to head the ball into goal. Real Madrid slowly and gradually got into the groove with Eder Militao having a near chance and Mbappe also having a couple of shots at goal. An inspiring half-time speech from the coach, Carlo Ancelotti appeared to have inspired the Madrid team and the second half was all Madrid.
Vinicius was almost on the score sheet before the first goal was scored. Continuously tormenting Betis’s backline he played a part in the build-up to the chance that Mbappe would take to score his first La Liga goal. Mbappe proved his worth through goals and how he scored showed why Madrid is putting the faith in him.
