Real Madrid departed the island of Majorca on Sunday night with only a point to their name after Mallorca came from behind to snatch a 1-1 draw in the opening La Liga match of the new season. This was a match in which Kylian Mbappe made his debut La Liga appearance for Real Madrid and despite Rodrygo giving Los Blancos the lead in the early stages of the game, the home side managed to equalise through Vedat Muriqi’s second-half header. The match started with Real Mallorca proving to be a tough nut to crack against the team that boasted so many stars.
The islanders began well but it was apparent that the quality of Real Madrid players would come into play at some point. In the 13 minutes, the expected happened when Madrid’s left-sided attack started pushing. A delicious backheel from Vinicius Jr found Jude Bellingham, who then played Mbappe into the game. The Frenchman then passed the ball to Rodrygo who scored to make it 1-0 to Real Madrid. In the first half, Madrid seemed to be getting the better of the game but Mallorca was not going to lie down. They kept on going, looking for areas to infiltrate and applying pressure at the back of Madrid’s defenders. At the start of the second half, Mallorca received their due. In the 53rd minute, a cross from the right wing was met by an unmarked Vedat Muriqi who with a header from close range put it past Thibaut Courtois to make it 1-1. The match became more attacking from that point and both the teams went for the winner. While Real Madrid controlled the ball for most of the match, Mallorca looked to be the more threatening side on the counter. In the last moments of the match, the hosts had several opportunities to score and take all three points but they failed to capitalize on their counter-attacks. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, which is something Madrid would not have wanted but Mallorca would not have minded.
Real Madrid, which has some of the biggest stars in football such as the newly signed Kylian Mbappe, however, seems still to be an incomplete team. The four forwards, Bellingham, Vinicius, Rodrygo, and Mbappe, all demonstrated good interplay and technical prowess, however, there are frailties in the backline which have been exploited in both their games. Despite having stars in their defensive line including Antonio Rudiger, Madrid’s backline seems vulnerable at times. Atalanta and Mallorca showed that opportunities can be made against them if one is willing to wait long enough. With the team still in the process of getting comfortable and new faces being brought in, there is a lot of room for improvement. Nonetheless, Carlo Ancelotti will have to work on these inadequacies if Madrid is to successfully defend its league crown.
