In a shocker, Real Sociedad emerged victors with a 1-0 win over La Liga leaders Barcelona through Sheraldo Becker's first-half goal at the Reale Arena. Barcelona went to this match as strong favorites and were expected to maintain their good run in the Spanish league. However, Sociedad frustrated those plans with a tight victory that reduced Barcelona’s advantage at the top of the table to six points. Making matters worse, Barcelona’s arch-rivals Real Madrid have a match in hand, which makes the whole title battle even more exciting.
Becker opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when he was able to beat the offside trap and head home a well-timed flick by a defender. His composed goal was music to the ears of the home fans and this laid the foundation of what would be a rather gripping evening in San Sebastian. Admittedly, the scoreline may have been tight but Sociedad was creating chances to extend the lead against Barcelona. Becker, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Ander Barrenetxea all squandered chances to put the hosts 2-0 up. Both of them got into good situations but failed to make something out of it, thus maintaining a slim scoreline and giving Barcelona some hope.
For FC Barcelona, it was a quite boring performance. Even when they sought to get an equalizer, they appeared a sorry lot and unbelievably did not come close to the target. This attacking crisis was however made worse by the absence of young talent Lamine Yamal from the game due to an injury. Without him, Barcelona could hardly build up any sort of pressure or maintain any sort of fluency. Their best chance came moments before Robert Lewandowski put the ball past the Spanish goalkeeper only to have the goal ruled out by VAR. The move leading up to the goal was rather shifty and came after a moment of good fortune at the very least, and further shows just how powerless Barcelona was in front of Sociedad’s defense.
Real Sociedad’s organized and vigorous performance was good enough to get their second home victory in La Liga this season and saw them climb to eighth in the table. This was a kind of victory indicating their perseverance and their overall tactical discipline on the field and they should carry this kind of performance forward into future games. The loss is a wake-up call for Barcelona as they look to make adjustments to ensure they retain their position at the top of the title race.
