20 June 2024
Steve Clarke’s Scotland remain in the hunt at Euro 2024 after a nerve-wracking 1-1 draw with Switzerland. Xherdan Shaqiri’s stunning strike canceled out Scott McTominay’s opener, leaving Scotland third in the group with one point. Victory over Hungary in their final group match could potentially secure their passage to the next round.
In a chaotic Group A clash in Cologne, Scotland looked revitalized compared to their heavy defeat in Munich five days prior. The Scots opened the scoring after a 10-minute spell showing more intensity and sharpness than in their previous outing. Scott McTominay’s goal came from a swift counter-attack, initially deflected by Fabian Schar into his own net but later credited to McTominay.
Switzerland equalized 13 minutes later with a rocket from Xherdan Shaqiri. The winger capitalized on Scotland’s sloppy attempt to play out from the back, unleashing a shot that left the Scots stunned.
Despite taking a point, Scotland faced a setback with a hamstring injury to Kieran Tierney, potentially ending his tournament. This loss deprives Steve Clarke of one of his key players.
After a 5-1 thrashing by Germany, Scotland emerged lively and determined against Switzerland. Billy Gilmour, orchestrating from midfield, sharpened their play significantly.
Scotland’s improved quality was evident early on. A rapid counter-attack down the left saw McTominay fire a shot that deflected off Schar and into the net. Initially ruled an own goal, UEFA later awarded it to McTominay.
However, Shaqiri’s equalizer followed soon after. The 32-year-old, despite a lackluster season with Chicago Fire in the MLS, reminded everyone of his enduring quality. Switzerland coach Murat Yakin still needs to find the perfect fit for Shaqiri alongside Breel Embolo and Kwadwo Duah.
Scotland’s first-half defensive frailties handed Switzerland numerous corners. Despite this, they managed to hold the scoreline. The second half, marked by intensity and near-misses, saw Scotland come close several times. Embolo’s potential winner for Switzerland was disallowed for offside.
A moment of misfortune struck as Tierney was stretchered off with a hamstring injury while attempting to stop Embolo’s disallowed goal. This injury is a significant blow for Scotland, who will need all their resources to secure qualification.
Talking Point – Gilmour the Difference
Billy Gilmour’s absence against Germany raised questions. His inclusion here made a noticeable difference. Alongside Callum McGregor, Gilmour’s presence ensured Scotland could build and maintain possession, providing a calmness sorely missing in their previous match.
Player of the Match – Manuel Akanji (Switzerland)
Manuel Akanji, the Manchester City defender, was imperious. He thwarted McTominay’s potential winner in the 89th minute, leading in successful passes and defensive actions. Akanji’s performance earned Switzerland a crucial point.
