Manchester United managed to secure a 3-0 win over Southampton, which was quite an important win for them, and Rashford also came back from his goal drought and scored his first goal since March. The result was a good result for Erik ten Hag’s team as they got the second Premier League victory this season.
The match could have had a different outcome, especially if Archer had scored from the penalty that was awarded in the first half. As the match remained tied at 0-0, Southampton was awarded a clear chance to take the lead, but Onana was on standby to make an important save to stop Archer. Moments later, Southampton was made to pay for the wasted opportunity as Manchester United scored through Matthijs de Ligt, who rose above everyone else to head in a corner kick.
In the first half of the game, United was able to double their lead. Amad Diallo put Rashford through on the left side of the penalty area and the England forward took his time before placing the ball in the back of the net, ending his goal drought of more than six months. It was a sweet return to form for Rashford who has been looking to get back to his best after a dry spell.
Southampton tried to equalize but was denied by a good goalkeeping display by Aaron Ramsdale, especially in the first half of the game. Nevertheless, the Saints’ chances of a comeback were cut short after Jack Stephens got his marching orders after a dangerous foul on Alejandro Garnacho. With the numerical superiority, United did not waste their chances, and Garnacho sealed the victory in the added time, putting the ball into an empty net after a low cross by Diogo Dalot, which made the score 3-0.
The win helped Manchester United in the league table as they rose the ladder, while Southampton stayed at the bottom with only a point in their first four matches.
