Arsenal FC were in awesome form as they beat Sporting CP 5-1 in the UEFA Champions League match. Arsenal were the better side throughout the match equaling its record of the biggest away victory in the competition. Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Magalhães, Bukayo Saka, and Leandro Trossard were on the scoresheet for Mikel Arteta’s men, who left Sporting stunned at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.
The match started with Arsenal on the front foot and Martinelli opened the scoring in the first seven minutes. The Brazilian forward made no mistake when he placed the ball in the back of the net off a low cross by Jurrien Timber to give the visitors the early lead.
Sporting, who got the better of Manchester City 4-1 in their last game in the competition, failed to display such dominance. Arsenal made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute when Kai Havertz capitalised on a through-ball by Bukayo Saka to beat the goalkeeper.
Shortly before the break, Gabriel Magalhães made it 3-0 for Arsenal. The defender leapt the highest to connect a header from Declan Rice’s corner and beat the Sporting goalkeeper to increase the Gunners’ lead to 3-0 before the break.
Sporting got one back just after the break, with Gonçalo Inácio rising to head home a corner in the 47th minute. The hosts came out of their shells for a while to put pressure on Arsenal and force them into a brief spell of defending.
However, Arsenal F.C were characteristically resilient and they extended their lead in the 65th minute. It was Bukayo Saka who calmly put the ball in the back of the net after Martin Ødegaard was fouled in the box to take a penalty kick.
The Gunners weren’t done yet. Veteran stand-in Leandro Trossard made certain of it in the 82nd minute, scoring the 5th of the night for Arsenal as they won 5-1.
This decisive win takes Arsenal to seventh in the new Champions League table.
