Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Ipswich Town: Szmodics and Delap Secure Ipswich's First Premier League Win in 22 Years

In a dramatic soccer match, Ipswich Town won its first Premier League match in over two decades, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Sunday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It had the air of a full house with 61,505 fans in the stadium, but it was the away side that dominated. Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap scored in the first half for Ipswich Town to secure their first league victory and move out of the relegation zone.

The two teams seemed to be fresh from the beginning of the match. Tottenham’s Brennan Johnson had a one-on-one opportunity from the first half but he failed to score it, and then Dominic Solanke tried to break the deadlock with a shot on target and later on, Cameron Burgess came close to scoring with a header that hit the bar. The turn of events began around the 30th minute, when Spurs were unable to clear the ball from Jens-Lys Cajuste, and Szmodics made them pay. He was able to score and put Ipswich ahead; this is the sixth time this season that Ipswich has scored the first goal in a match.

Ipswich kept the pressure on and they extended their lead when Delap placed it past the keeper Vicario from the line after a shambolic moment between the Tottenham shot-stopper and defender Dragusin. The goal also muted the home contingent and placed the newly-promoted side in the driving seat.

Tottenham appeared to be slowly building themselves back into the game early into the second half as Solanke put the ball in the back of the net, only for VAR to disallow the goal due to handball. However, they did manage to pull one back later in the match, with the scorer being Rodrigo Bentancur, who scored a header from a Pedro Porro corner in the 68th minute. Ipswich fought hard and did not allow Spurs any further through to add to their tally.

It was the fifth defeat in the season that left the Tottenham fans in a state of shock. However, the upcoming international break comes at a perfect time and the Spurs fans will hope that their team will get back to their winning ways after it.
