Tottenham Hotspur produced a dominant second-half performance in front of 61000 fans to come from behind and win 4-1 against Aston Villa, with Dominic Solanke scoring a brace in the comeback to bring Spurs to within touching distance of the Premier League’s top four. Spurs fans left the stadium happy with a spirited display from their team in the second half as the London side dominated the game under Ange Postecoglou.
Morgan Rogers put Aston Villa ahead when Tottenham failed to clear a corner and he picked up the ball and scored. Villa dominated in the first half, putting Spurs under pressure most of the time. However, the first half ended with Tottenham being the team that was focused on coming back into the game in the second half. The hosts quickly responded to the lead at the start of the second half when Brennan Johnson equalized for the home side four minutes into the second half by prodding home from a good move by Spurs.
Postecoglou made a strategic move of subbing in Heung-min Son before the 60-minute mark in the game. Some even doubted the decision but it proved beneficial almost instantly as Solanke came through to score two goals in four minutes, putting Tottenham in the driver’s seat. Solanke’s second-half double turned the tide in Spurs’ favor and his pinpoint accuracy is one of the main reasons why he has become indispensable to Postecoglou.
In the last minutes of the match, James Maddison scored a free-kick to complete the victory in the added time, and several Spurs fans who were already rejoicing for the team’s incredible performance were delighted with this amazing free-kick. His strike was a fitting end to a great game as Tottenham registered a big victory that placed them just two points away from the top four.
However, for Postecoglou, there will be worries about the fitness of his players as both Cristian Romero and Richarlison had to be substituted. They will be closely observed as the Spurs’ schedule will be a congested one in the upcoming weeks.
For Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, the defeat is quite food for thought as his side lost their first away match of the season. Villa, who play Club Brugge in the Champions League next, will have to pick themselves up quickly while Spurs play Galatasaray in the Europa League on Thursday.
Tottenham Hotspur fans will be eager to see more of such performances this season as they are still basking in the euphoria of the win.
