Violence Erupts in Split After Football Match

Following the Croatian Cup semi-final clash between Hajduk and Dinamo, chaos descended upon the city of Split as large groups of Hajduk football fans engaged in violent behavior, prompting police intervention and numerous arrests.

The match concluded with a 0-1 victory for Dinamo, but the post-match proceedings spiraled into mayhem as disgruntled Hajduk supporters illegally stormed the pitch, targeting the visiting team and their fans. Prompt action from law enforcement prevented the situation from escalating further, diverting the assailants back to the stands.

However, the unrest persisted outside the stadium, with mobs hurling projectiles such as lighted flares, bottles, and stones at police officers. The clashes resulted in injuries to eight officers, one of whom required surgery for a fractured femur.

Trash containers were set ablaze, necessitating the intervention of firefighters to extinguish the fires amidst fears for public safety and property damage. Despite efforts to quell the violence, tensions remained high, prompting continued police monitoring throughout the night to prevent further confrontations.

In response to the upheaval, Split Mayor Ivica Puljak condemned the violence, emphasizing the need to uphold peace and civility in the city. He expressed regret over the unsavory scenes witnessed and called for unity to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Notably, this incident marked the second defeat for Hajduk at the hands of Dinamo in just four days, intensifying emotions among fans but underscoring the importance of maintaining decorum and respect in football rivalry.
