Liverpool won a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux to sit at the top of the English Premier League. After Manchester City lost points to Newcastle, Arne Slot’s team did not miss a chance and, thanks to the composed penalty by Mohamed Salah, took the three points. The win placed Liverpool in a strong position to challenge for the title and showed that the team can manage nervy away games.
Liverpool was slow off the block and could not penetrate through a resolute Wolves side. But they got the lead right before the halftime was called. In the first half of stoppage time, Ibrahima Konate leaped the highest to head Diogo Jota’s perfectly delivered cross from the left to score his first Premier League goal. The timing of the goal was brilliant as it came at the right time for Liverpool as they headed into the break.
Wolves, placed at the bottom of the Premier League, were bereft of ideas up front but got a lifeline in the form of an equalizer just after the second half started. A mix-up between Konate and Alisson led to Rayan Ait-Nouri picking up the ball, and he coolly equalized for the team by putting the ball past Alisson in the 56th minute of the game. The goal sparked some joy for Wolves, who now fancied themselves to get an important point.
However, Liverpool was quick to reply to that instantly. Only a few minutes after the equalizer, the Reds were given a penalty after Cody Gakpo was fouled inside the box. Mohamed Salah proceeded to take the spot-kick and scored for Liverpool after beating Sam Johnstone. This was Salah’s fifth goal of the season and, as has become customary, he showed nerves of steel in front of goal for the Reds.
The win takes Liverpool one point ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal in the English Premier League, a crucial step as Liverpool seeks to mount a serious title challenge. At the same time, Wolves continue to occupy the last position In the table and have only one point in six matches.
