Xavi, Gareth Southgate, Graham Potter: Potential successors for the next Managerial position at Manchester United

Manchester United is now seeking a sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013 following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal. After a poor start to the season, which saw the team stumble to a 2-1 loss to West Ham and a failure to record any wins in the UEFA Europa League, the club had to act. As a temporary replacement, United has hired Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined the team as an assistant this summer. The question now is: who will come to take that position to offer permanent solutions and positive results at the Old Trafford? Below, find some of the most promising candidates believed to be in the running.

Possible Successors for Ten Hag

  • Ruben Amorim

Currently managing Sporting CP, Ruben Amorim has attracted much attention after being connected with the positions at Liverpool and West Ham. Amorim has youth on his side as well as a recent Primera Liga title to his name. He may, however, be planning his next move to Manchester City with Sporting’s technical director Hugo Viana expected to be hired as City’s director of football.

  • Gareth Southgate

Despite resigning from the England manager’s position after a Euro 2024 defeat by Spain, the Manchester United position might appeal to Southgate. Appointed alongside United’s current sporting director Dan Ashworth to revitalise the FA’s youth development, Southgate may be a good fit for United with this tandem.

  • Graham Potter

Potter, who has been in contact with Ashworth during his time at Brighton, can be another candidate who may well find his place within the new hierarchy established by INEOS. Potter, who had his challenges during his time at Chelsea, has demonstrated an understanding of the tactical side of the game, which is something United might need to develop for the future.

  • Xavi Hernandez

A legendary player and former Barcelona manager, Xavi is currently unemployed after the break up with the Catalan club. The latest Instagram post that shows his son wearing a United kit added to the anticipation of the Manchester United fans. Xavi, being a manager for some years, and a legendary player, could aid in uniting the dressing room.

  • Zinedine Zidane

Zidane as a manager too has been good, winning three UEFA Champions League and two La Liga in his stint at Real Madrid. While his English language is said to be poor, the presence and footballing brain of Zidane could still overcome any language barrier at United.

  • Ruud van Nistelrooy

Van Nistelrooy has a chance to show his worth as interim manager. Especially loved by fans and recognized as a club legend, he also clinched the Dutch Cup with PSV Eindhoven last season. However, there were some rumors regarding certain conflicts between him and his players. His next few games could be an audition for the role, which would allow United’s hierarchy to decide whether he could do a Solskjaer and go from being a temporary to a permanent solution.

Other Potential Successors for the Role

Thomas Frank of Brentford, Kieran McKenna of Ipswich, and Edin Terzic, a former Borussia Dortmund manager, are some of the managers who have been named. Frank suggested recently that he might be in the mood for a change and McKenna is regarded highly in the UK coaching ranks. Terzic who was recently in the Champions League final with Dortmund, may also be in contention for the role. With United fans ready for a change, Manchester United tickets are selling fast.

Manchester United has loyal fans, and with a new manager on the horizon, Manchester United tickets are likely going to be in high demand. People will be looking forward to the next games in Old Trafford to see a new approach and a fresh team. The opportunity to witness the dawn of a new era, especially under one of these popular candidates, will definitely spur more people to get interested in Manchester United tickets.
