Xavi Hernandez Sacked by Barcelona in Shock Dismissal, to Depart from La Liga Club at End of Season

Xavi Hernandez's tenure at Barcelona has ended in a surprising move, with the club announcing his departure. This comes after Xavi recently committed to staying at Barcelona despite previously stating he would resign at the end of the campaign. His departure follows a tumultuous season for the former Barcelona captain, who initially decided to step down in January after a shocking 5-3 loss to Villarreal. Xavi cited a "lack of respect" and described the role as “cruel and unpleasant.”

Despite his resignation announcement, Barcelona went on a strong run, reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League before being eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain. However, the club has now confirmed that Xavi will not continue as head coach for the 2024-25 season.

The club's official statement read: "Today Friday, FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has informed Xavi Hernandez that he will not be continuing as first team coach in the 2024-25 season. The meeting happened at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper and was also attended by sporting vice-president Rafa Yuste, director of sport Anderson Luís de Souza, Deco, Xavi, Oscar Hernández and Sergio Alegre. FC Barcelona wishes to thank Xavi for his work as coach, as well as for his inimitable career as a player and as team captain, and wishes him every future success in the world. Xavi Hernandez will be coaching the team for the last time in Sunday's game away to Sevilla. During the course of the next few days, FC Barcelona will be making an announcement regarding the new first team structure."

Rumors have circulated that Barca president Joan Laporta was displeased with Xavi after he publicly discussed the club's financial difficulties, which could impact next season. Reports suggest that former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick is a potential replacement for Xavi at Camp Nou.

This decision marks Xavi's second departure from Barcelona, having left as a player in 2015. He returned as manager in 2021, replacing Ronald Koeman, and led the team to a La Liga title last season – their first since 2019 and the first without Lionel Messi since 1999. However, inconsistent performances and a lack of form throughout this season saw them fail to challenge champions Real Madrid effectively.
